An aromatherapy bracelet does one thing a diffuser cannot: it goes with you. The aroma is there on the train, at your desk, in the middle of a long afternoon, close enough to notice whenever you lift your hand.
The way it works is almost entirely down to one material. Here is what it is, how to use it, and how to choose one.
The Secret Is the Lava Stone
Look closely at any of our aromatherapy bracelets and you will see a few beads that look different from the rest: matte, dark, and full of tiny holes. Those are lava stones.
Lava stone forms when molten rock cools quickly and traps gas inside it, which leaves the stone riddled with pores. Those pores are what make the bracelet work. A drop of essential oil soaks into the stone instead of sitting on the surface, and then releases slowly over the following days as it evaporates.
The polished gemstones on the bracelet do not absorb oil. They are there for the look, and for what the stone means to the person wearing it. The lava does the aromatic work.
How to Use One
- Put one or two drops of essential oil directly onto the lava stones, not the gemstones.
- Let the oil absorb fully before you put the bracelet on. A few minutes is usually enough.
- Wear it. The aroma is strongest in the first hours and fades gradually after that.
- Refresh with another drop or two every few days, or whenever you want the scent back.
That is all there is to it. The common mistake is using too much: more oil does not make it last longer, it just means the stone is wet against your skin.
How Long Does the Scent Last?
Usually a few days, with the aroma strongest on day one. Base notes such as cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver, and frankincense hold on longest. Bright top notes like citrus and mint are noticeable right away but fade faster.
If you want a scent that lasts the week, choose a base note. If you want something you refresh daily, a top note is fine.
Which Oils Work Best
Almost anything you like, with a few practical guidelines.
Good choices: lavender and cedarwood for evenings, peppermint or sweet orange for a midday lift, and frankincense when you want something grounding. Our essential oil blends work well too, since they are already balanced.
Skip the hot oils. Cinnamon, cassia, and clove are lovely in a diffuser but can irritate skin, and a bracelet sits against your wrist all day. Save them for the air.
Mind citrus in the sun. Citrus oils can increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight. If you will be outdoors for hours, choose something else that day.
Choosing a Bracelet
Every bracelet in the collection has lava stones, so they all work the same way. The choice is the gemstones, which people pick for their look, their color, or what they are traditionally said to mean.
A few to start with: Amethyst, deep purple and the classic choice for calm. Hematite, smooth and gray, and popular with people who want something understated. 7 Chakras, with a stone for each chakra, for color. And the Silver Heart, with a hanging silver heart charm, for something a little dressier.
If you want to know what each stone is said to represent, we wrote a full guide in our post on how to use roller bottles, which covers twelve gemstones and their traditional meanings.
Several bracelets come in an adjustable version with sliding strings, which fit almost any wrist and are the easier pick when buying for someone else.
Caring for Your Bracelet
Take it off before showering, swimming, or washing dishes. Water does not damage lava stone, but it does wash out the oil and wears on the stretch cord over time.
Keep it somewhere dry when you are not wearing it, and avoid letting lotions or perfume build up on the stones. If you want to switch scents, let the old oil fade for a few days first, or the two will mix.
A Gift That Is Easy to Get Right
Aromatherapy bracelets are one of the easier gifts to choose, because they work for almost anyone and need no explanation beyond a drop of oil. Our Create Your Own Bracelet Set lets you pick the bracelet, and the Red Bow Bracelet Gift Set arrives ready for the holidays.
Pair one with a single bottle of a favorite oil and the gift is complete.
