Customize Your Signature Scent: DIY Perfume Using Essential Oils

"It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love..."
– Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera
Of the five senses, scent is arguably the most powerful – it has the ability to trigger memories, tell stories, announce a presence, and even make us fall in love. Scent is also extremely personal, varying from individual to individual; often, people talk their a “signature scent,” which they wear every day. But if you don't have one, how can you find yours?
The perfume industry makes billions of dollars annually selling scents, and many of them do smell incredible; unfortunately, most manufactured perfumes are laden with toxins and chemicals that have been linked to severe allergic reactions, hormone disruption, and even cancer. This means that perfume probably isn't the best thing to spritz on your skin, the largest and most porous organ!
However, perfumes made from all-natural essential oils are not only healthy for your skin – they'll blend with the scents of your own body to create a scent that’s completely unique. At Plantlife, our essential oils are 100% pure and therapeutic grade with no additives or fillers, so you can feel good about what you use on your skin. We have a full range of single note oils available, as well as ready-made oil blends that make a great starting point.
With Plantlife’s essential oils, it’s easy to create your own signature scent: just experiment with different combinations until you find that special one! When you can’t stop smelling your wrists or you're getting compliments left and right, you’ll know you’ve found it. Below are a few starter recipes for your own DIY perfume – aromatic, toxin-free, and 100% natural!

DIY Essential Oil PerfumeWhat You’ll Need:
1 tablespoon carrier oil – preferably sweet almond, grapeseed, or jojoba oil
1 tablespoon vodka (optional)
Essential oils of choice
Filtered water
Bottle for shaking
Perfume bottle
Directions:
Mix all ingredients except water together and let sit for 48 hours (or longer if you’d like a stronger scent). Vodka helps the scent last longer, but feel free to omit if you prefer to be alcohol-free. Then, add 2 tablespoons of filtered water to the blend. Shake the bottle and pour the mixture through a coffee filter to get rid of any sediment. Pour your perfume into a spritz bottle and you’re done! For the longest possible shelf life, store in a cool, dark place.
